Crittenden "Cri de Coeur" Sous-Voile Savagnin 2015
Region: Mornington Peninsula
Variety: Savagnin
Gary Crittenden is a true pioneer of the Mornington Peninsula having planted his first vines in the region in 1982. His son Rollo, a 2010 “Young Gun of Wines”, is now in charge of winemaking and the direction of the Estate. Vineyard balance is a definite focus here. The family is fully committed to chemical free viticulture, applying natural compost to build soil health and strong vines.
This wine is as close to the famous Vin Jaune du Jura I’ve tasted from Australia, in fact I though it was from Jura when I first tasted blind. It is a very specific style of wine, similar to sherry. The wine is aged in older, not completely filled barrels, it is partially protected from oxidation by a thin veil of microorganism, called “voile” in the Jura, just like the flor in sherry.
Yellow colour, nutty characters, sea brine and crunchy acidity are all there in this classic style.
