Pooley "Butcher's Hill" Pinot Noir 2018
Region: Coal River - Tasmania
Variety: Pinot Noir
Pooley Wines is a true family business, in 1985 Denis and Margaret Pooley planted their first vines in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. Today, their grandson Matt is the viticulturist and their granddaughter Anna is the winemaker.
The Butcher’s Hill vineyard, situated in the town of Richmond, is the steepest in the Coal River Valley (and one of the steepest vineyard in Tasmania). It was planted by the Pooley’s in 2003, on dolerite over sandstone soil, facing north.Surprisingly for most people, the Coal River Valley is one of the driest grape growing region in Australia.
Butcher’s Hill has long been my favourite of the Pooley’s vineyards, and the 2018 is no exception. The wine is so perfumed with black cherries, spices, red plums and dried flowers. On the palate, it is lively and bright with a silky oak tannins texture.
