By Farr "Sangreal" Pinot Noir 2018
Region: Geelong - Bellarine Peninsula
Variety: Pinot Noir
By Farr Wines is of course an icon of the Australian wine industry. Not many Australian winemakers know Pinot Noir as well as Gary Farr and son Nick, now in charge of the Estate. Established in the Moorabool Valley, between Geelong and Ballarat, Gary planted the first block in 1994 (the Sangreal vineyard). Nick and Gary are expertly inspired by their 20 years+ experience at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, using traditional techniques such as wild ferment, high level of whole bunch and long maceration on grape skin.
The Sangreal vineyard lies on a north-facing slope with a soil composition of bluestone and overlaying limestone with red ironstone on the surface. The Pinot Noir vines planted in Sangreal are clones 114 and 115.
With 60% whole bunch, and aged in mostly new French oak, spices, smoked meat, tang and textured tannins are to be expected with this wine, and it delivers.
